The journey of a physical record begins with the most perilous and highly specialized process in audio engineering: cutting the master lacquer. Unlike a digital file which possesses infinite headroom, a vinyl record is a physical valley carved into nitrocellulose. The audio signal is converted into mechanical motion by a fiercely powerful amplifier driving a heated sapphire or diamond stylus. If a mix contains excessive, out-of-phase sub-bass frequencies, the stylus will physically launch itself out of the groove, rendering the record unplayable. 03. Electroforming
The Nickel Baths
Once the soft, incredibly fragile lacquer is cut, it is highly susceptible to temperature variations and dust. It must be immediately transported to the galvanic baths to begin the electroforming process. This is where manufacturing transitions from acoustic physics into aggressive industrial chemistry. The lacquer is sprayed with a thin layer of liquid silver to render it electrically conductive, and then submerged in a highly volatile, electro-chemically charged nickel sulfamate bath.
